Weekend Excursions

We suggest a few possibilities to organize your weekend activities. You will be spoilt for choice between cultural trips, excursions to the mountains or a trip to the Aeolian Islands:

Free time in CalabriaA trip by boat takes you to the Aeolian Islands, seven islands in front of Sicily, each of them with its own charm and particular atmosphere. During the excursion you will see 3 of them. Lipari is the biggest one, with its nice and narrow streets and a lot of shops. The castle of Lipari hosts an archaeological museum. The island Vulcano is characterized by its hot sulphureous water springs where having a bath is a real pleasure for the body. The third island to be visited is Stromboli, the only volcano all over Europe in constant activity. When you get near the island, you might see pieces of lava falling in the sea. It will be an unforgettable experience!

Waterfall in CalabriaIn Reggio Calabria the city where the famous fashion designer Gianni Versace was born - you can find the famous Bronze-statues of Riace in the National Archaeological Museum. Here you can also learn how, in ancient times, Calabria was the navel of the world. Make a walk on the famous "Lungomare Matteotti" and you will enjoy a wonderful view over Sicily. A visit to the beautiful cathedral and a shopping tour along "Corso Garibaldi" will be the right conclusion of an amazing day-trip. Reggio Calabria is easily reachable by train along the fascinating "Costa Viola".

To those who would like to do a day tour to Sicily we recommend the famous city of Taormina with its Greek-Roman amphitheatre and the breathtaking view on the volcano Etna!
You reach Taormina in 4 hours by train along the gorgeous Costa Viola. Because of the distance, it may be convenient to plan an overnight in Taormina.

The monastery of Serra San Bruno is an abbey situated in the mountains and with a very special atmosphere. You can have a relaxing walk in the wood nearby or have a picnic next to the small lake of Santa Maria del Bosco. This area is also known for its delicious typical mushroom dishes. Because of the strict seclusion of the monks it's not permitted to go into the monastery but in the little museum you can hear about the story of the abbey founded in 1091 after Chr. and also about the monk's life today. You arrive at Serra San Bruno in 1,5 h. by car. The last kilometres of winding roads will take you at an altitude of 800 metres. On your way you could make a stop in the beautiful town of Vibo Valentia.
